The Learning and Research Centre at Southmead Hospital is a joint venture between the University of Bristol and North Bristol Hospitals NHS Trust. This new facility provides CAT 2 teaching and research facilities and office accommodation for the University alongside a new Regional Quality Control Laboratory for the Trust for use by pharmaceutical departments across the South West. Research will involve testing the chemical, microbiological and physical properties of pharmaceutical products and a requirement of this work has therefore been the provision of a clean room environment.
The four storey L&R Centre is an extension to an existing building on the hospital site and as such the design has required internal refurbishment and reordering of the existing structure in order to best incorporate the new facilities which include a full height atrium, a new cafe and administration and research offices. The concrete framed structure are clad in a combination of brick and curtain walling which repeats the themes of the site-wide art strategy through feature coloured panels.
The facility is designed to meet BREEAM Excellent
